Like what you order from the menu at a restaurant and how it reflects on your personality. And how if two (or more) people order their meals before you, and they happen to order the same thing you were planning to order, then you have to change your selection. Otherwise you will look like someone who just follows the crowd and orders whatever everyone else orders.
There are rules, people!!
I’m just surprised at how many people aren’t aware of them.
That’s normal, right? Everyone thinks like me. Don’t they???? ;-}
Oh well, my point here actually has nothing to do with self-consciousness or entree selections. Read more...
I once heard someone pray years ago for Amy Grant and Michael W Smith because they were both crossing over into “secular music”. I didn’t get the sense that the prayer was for protective purposes, but more so to lead their misguided souls back to the safety and comforts of what we like to call “Christian music”. Read more...
I recently finished up a piece on the idea of prayer. My inspiration came from both Matthew (Mt 6.5-7) and Luke’s (Lk 18.9-14) gospels where Jesus compares and contrasts what Pharisaical prayer looks like as opposed to authentic prayer. This in turn got me thinking… How often do we actually think that the Pharisee He’s referring to may in fact be you and me? Am I concerned more about how long my prayer is? How theologically educated and impressive I sound? Am I praying to a room of people or to the Lord God Himself? Well, at least I can thank God and take comfort in the fact that I’m not like one of these folks. After all, I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.
Back in Memphis where I come from, the words “pin” and “pen” are indistinguishable when spoken. So are tin and ten. Bin and Ben.
So it’s no wonder that at some point very early in life, I got a little confused about Lent.
Dryer Lent? Lent Brush? The whole thing seemed confusing and just a little odd to me. I had no clue about the whole ashes-on-the-forehead thing. Even more perplexing was that this was somehow connected to Mardi Gras. I had heard whispers of stories about that, and those beads definitely had nothing to do with any religious holiday I had ever heard of. And a plastic baby in a cake? No clue what that was all about. I love Saturday Night Live. It’s had its ups and downs over the years, but there’s some great new talent too. I think Kristin Wiig is right up there with Dana Carvey, Molly Shannon and Chris Farley when it comes to creating outrageous characters, like the dancer on the Lawrence Welk show with the high forehead and tiny hands. That one has me rolling on the floor in tears every time. Another one of her characters is one who cannot keep a secret — someone with all the self-restraint of the Tasmanian Devil or a politician at a Vegas convention. You know the one I’m talking about? Check out this video:
This is the copy for a piece I’m currently working on for our church to convey the idea of prayer (based on Mt 6.5-7 & Lk 18.9-14). I think I’m close to nailing down the copy and now just need to find some graphics to go with it.
How to Pray: An Instructional Guide for Pharisees
1. Carefully select a highly populated open public area such as a place of worship or crowded street corner.
2. Upon reaching your desired location, clear throat and proceed to pray in a loud voice to ensure you will be seen and heard clearly.
3. Consistently use words such as “I”, “me”, “my”, and “myself” throughout life cycle of prayer.*
4. After approximately 10 minutes of continuous prayer, take a moment to observe those around you (while continuing to pray).
5. If all attention is directed towards you, repeat step 4.
6. If attention is noticeably lacking, increase volume of prayer and find higher ground to stand upon for better visibility.
7. Repeat step 4. Read more...
It took getting snowed in for a weekend in January to get this started.
Nothing earth-shattering to post yet. But hopefully this week I’ll meet with my co-conspirator (at Lupie’s, of course) and plot the course for future posts.
